We’re Tim Lawley (driver) and Nicu Mladin (navigator), colleagues at Maple Parking, taking on HERO-ERA\’s \”LeJog\”, \’the toughest endurance motoring event in Europe, possibly the world…\’ We are attempting this in a plucky little 1972 Fiat 500!! 53 years old!! LeJog is a true winter test—regularities, night sections, and December weather—running from Land’s End to John o’Groats. WHAT IS HERO-ERA LEJOG? LEJOG is a winter endurance rally for historic cars that runs the full length of Britain—from Land’s End to John o’Groats—over multiple legs across ~1,500 miles. It’s designed as a reliability and navigation trial, not a speed race: crews are scored on accuracy in regularity sections (holding set average speeds) and short driving tests on private land. Penalties come from being early/late at secret controls or making mistakes on tests. WHY IT’S FAMOUS (AND TOUGH) December conditions: night driving, rain, ice and sometimes snow are part of the challenge. Recent editions covered ~1,500 miles over 5 legs in ~75 hours. WHAT THE CREW ACTUALLY DOES Driver: keeps pace precisely, preserves the car, and executes tests cleanly. Navigator: manages speed tables and timing, plots and follows the route book, and hits every control to the second. That’s the core ethos of HERO-ERA regularity rallying. FUN FLAVOUR LeJog includes notorious night regularities (e.g., the “Loch Ness Monster” section in northern Scotland), which demand total focus when fatigue is highest. WHY DO IT? Because this cause is close to home.
