January 2024 Newsletter

Wishing you a very Happy New Year from TEDF !

Well 2023 was our first full calendar year and with your help and support we raised over  £223,000 and sponsored 37 paediatric Heroes, who will go on to advance their careers in helping children and their families when they need expert medical care and attention, and in many cases, life saving help.

These sorts of results are truly way beyond our wildest hopes and dreams for the Foundation and for beautiful Evie’s legacy of kindness and caring. When we set up the Foundation, we expected these sorts of numbers for Year 5 of our plan… and certainly not in our first year!  This goes to show what amazing support we have from you all, but also that our mission is genuinely fulfilling a real need in the NHS. There is great talent and commitment from so many passionate people working in children’s medicine but not enough money to support them to grow and develop, and this is where we can step in and ensure these wonderful professionals go on to fulfil their potential.

We ended 2023 with our Christmas Party on Saturday 2nd December, which was a fabulous night raising over £30,000 on the evening thanks to all those who attended, those who donated auction and raffle prizes and so many of you that bought raffle tickets.

A huge thank you to the team at Betteshanger Park and Mark Quinn who provided the venue which proved a fantastic setting for the event. And so by popular demand we will be back at brilliant Betteshanger this year (yes 2024!)…. so the first date for your diary is Saturday 7th December, 2024! We will have more details on the website soon and the ability to purchase early tickets so you don’t miss out.

We also ended the year with an uplifting and emotional Christmas Concert from the Canterbury Sing Space Choir on Saturday 9th December. It was a great success, raised over £1,000 and had us all singing along to West End theatre classics and our favourite Christmas tunes!  Big thanks to Laura Boon, Emily Gant and their talented choir.

And finally, huge thanks to Julie and the team at Unit 1 for their ongoing support this year, with their Christmas Eve Raffle also raising over £1,000.

So, what’s planned for 2024?

Here’s a taster of what we have in store in 2024 so far, with more information to follow on the website soon:

Saturday 4th May

A screening of the documentary Under The Surface, which is a beautiful and inspiring film about our friend Jim Read and his journey from breaking his back to swimming Channels, with one of our very own Trustee Simon Hagger by his side. This independent film is dedicated to our beautiful Evie and any profits from this screening event will go to the Foundation.

Saturday 15th June

The first TEDF Big Bike Ride, which will start and finish in Barham near Canterbury. This will be a challenging but fun and scenic 45 km ride through the local countryside, forests and gravel tracks of this lovely part of Kent. Tickets will be on sale soon for the first year’s 100 place limit, it will be fully supported with guides, mechanics and refreshment stops on the way. Finishing with wood fired pizza and a pint, plus a special finishers treat. More details on the web site soon!

Sunday 7th July

The TEDF Afternoon Tea Party, hosted by Evie’s Aunty Caroline in her beautiful garden. Expect cake, cake and more cake and maybe some scones, cream and Jam. Lots of tea, a plant sale and of course a summer themed raffle.

Saturday 7th September

Return of the Big Coastal Walk, which was so popular last year and raised over £28,000!!  This year it’s back and bigger than ever with 300 spaces, but these are already selling fast, so grab your space here The Big Coastal Walk. Don’t worry, it’s the same distance of 17 miles along the coast from Unit 1 in Hythe to the Folkestone Harbour arm… and back!  There is also a smaller family walk of 3 miles. You can also organise to walk at the same time at alternative locations, last year we had walks happening simultaneously in Germany, Cyprus, Bristol and even Norway!

Wednesday 16th October

The popular TEDF golf day, which will be another fun “Texan Scramble” team event, with dinner and raffle. This year’s venue will be the fantastic Princes Golf club on the Kent coast and will include up to 20 teams of 4 players. Anyone wishing to enter a team please do register your interest. More details will be circulated shortly.

Saturday 7th December

The big Christmas bash, as mentioned above we will be repeating the winning formula at Betteshanger Park with auction, raffle and more availability of the all inclusive Platinum Party Tables if you want to treat your friends, family or work team to a special night out with music and dancing.

And there will be more…. we have more Comedy and Quiz nights in the planning stages.

We just wanted to say Thank You again to everyone who attended or supported an event last year, the vast majority of our funding came from these events and the generous donors who bought raffle tickets and bid on auction prizes.  We do not take this for granted and rather than asking for up front cash donations we always try to add some value back, to have some fun, to create an event or social experience that you can be part of and by doing so become an essential part of our mission.

Last year we also had many incredible individual challenges, with Jasper Ryman cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats off road on a mountain bike (…free camping!), we have the amazing Dickie Mackness (Where’s Dickie?) who is STILL walking around the entire coastline of Great Britain in honour of Evie and the Foundation’s work and so many other contributions from friends running marathons, running cake sales, taking part in football matches… the list goes on.

We would of course LOVE IT if you were considering a New Year challenge of your own, a special event, or even a New Year resolution that might involve TEDF in some way and so if you want to Get Involved then we are 100% right there with you to help and support you all the way. Individual or team fundraising pages can be set up via our platform.

So here’s to a wonderful, fun, happy and healthy 2024 for you and your families.

Thank you so much for choosing TEDF as something you are prepared to be part of and we look forward to seeing you at one of our many events over this new year.

With love,

The Trustees
