Emily McInnes

Please briefly describe your clinical/medical experience to date?

I am a Paediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist caring for children requiring long-term ventilation to support their breathing. My background is in critical care so I have worked on a Paediatric High Dependency Unit and a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, caring for children who are acutely unwell or those with complex care needs requiring long-term care.

What motivated you to enter paediatric care in the first place?

I have always had a passion for working with children. I find paediatric nursing such a rewarding job and feel very lucky to be in the profession.

How will the funding from The Evie Dove Foundation help you to advance your career and your impact/services to children?

European Respiratory Society Congress (ERS) is an annual event that brings together the world’s respiratory experts to showcase all the latest advances in respiratory medicine and science. Part of my role as a clinical respiratory nurse specialist in non-invasive and long-term ventilation, is to be up to date with the latest advances in respiratory medicine. I have a duty of care to provide excellent, kind and compassionate care to all of my patients and their family. I have been doing some work over the last year to help improve the long-term ventilation service, after a clinical incident indicated that further research and safety precautions need to be implemented when prescribing and delivering supplemental oxygen via long-term ventilation. I have been given the opportunity to present my work at ERS so that I can share my findings with other health care professionals. This will help to raise awareness about the complications that can occur, thus maintaining patient safety.
