Kat Watts

Please briefly describe your clinical/medical experience to date?

I have been a nurse for 21 years. I started off working on a paediatric medical ward looking after children with a variety of health conditions. This is where I found my love of oncology as there were cancer patients on the ward. I trained in chemotherapy administration and then went on to gain an oncology qualification so I was able to become an oncology CNS. I am now working towards finishing my Advanced Clinical Practice qualification in paediatric oncology. I love the rapport that I build up with the patients and their families and supporting them as much as I can with the hope their journey is as manageable as possible

What motivated you to enter paediatric care in the first place?

I love the resilience of children when they are faced with illness and complex situations. Children remain positive at all times and their personalities really shine through.

How will the funding from The Evie Dove Foundation help you to advance your career and your impact/services to children?

My qualification as an ACP will hopefully lead to a more streamlined approach to the patients and their families. I will see them when they come for chemotherapy and assess that they are well enough without having to wait for the medical team. I wish to be involved in more trials to find the newest and most innovative treatments for cancer with the aim of finding successful treatments in the harder to treat cancers. I want to continue to support the patients and their families as much as I can during their cancer journey.

How did you find out about The Evie Dove Foundation?

From posters at work and through my line manager.

Tell us about yourself!

I live in South East London, having trained and Kings College London. I love socialising with my best friends and their children and try to have as much fun as possible outside of work. My main achievements have been gaining my first MSc in Advanced Cancer Practice and hopefully gaining my ACP qualification. I love to travel and learn about different cultures and hope to do more travelling in the coming years. I am also a massive music fan, love festivals and live music and try to go as often as I can!!

Anything else you would like to tell us about your experience, future aspirations and motivations?

I am motivated to be the best nurse I can to the patients and families I look after!
