Nicola Blount

Please briefly describe your clinical/medical experience to date?

I Graduated from Southampton university in 2009 with my degree in children’s nursing.  From there I went straight to work on PIam Brown ward at Southampton General which is the paediatric haematology and oncology ward. I worked there for over 7 years before I then moved to London.   Once in London I then worked at the Royal Marsden Hospital and UCLH all in Children and Young peoples haematology and oncology.  I moved to Great Ormond Street Hospital in 2019 where I started working as a neuro oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist and still work there now.

What motivated you to enter paediatric care in the first place?

I often get asked this and actually find it a really difficult question to answer as I can’t remember a time when it wasn’t what I wanted to do.  I have always found that I have been able to build a good rapport with children and young people and have been able to communicate with them on a level that is appropriate to their age.  This has really helped me to be able to engage with them and earn their trust. Which I believe is essential to working well with them through potentially scary situations.

How will the funding from The Evie Dove Foundation help you to advance your career and your impact/services to children?

With support from the foundation I am hoping to start my PGCert in Enhanced Practice.  This course will not only help to solidify the knowledge I already have but will also help me expand my knowledge in direct patient care and management.  Successfully completing this course will allow me to be able to care and support my patients with a much better knowledge base and understanding, which will in turn allow me to advocate for, and manage my patients with a higher level of skill and knowledge. I hope that this increased skill and knowledge will help my patients to feel more supported throughout their treatment and after care.
