Ruth Hornby

Please briefly describe your clinical/medical experience to date?

I have worked as a Dietitian for over 15 years, starting as a rotational dietitian across various disciplines and specialising in renal dietetics for 8 years. After becoming a parent I decided to move over to Paediatric dietitian and for the last 6 years have been working for Oxford Children’s Hospital covering PICU, Cardiology, general paediatric wards and now holding the role of Team leader and Critical cares lead (PICU and Neonates). I have recently been lucky enough to be involved in research and am the PI for the GASTRIC study which is a multi centre study looking at feeding practices on PICU.

What motivated you to enter paediatric care in the first place?

I wanted to work with Children since becoming a Mum so made the brave decision to change specialities and took advantage of an opening in the paediatric dietetic team. Since joining i have not looked back, every day is really rewarding and you work with some very talented and caring professionals. Working at Oxford Children’s Hospital allows you work with many MDT’s that puts the child at the heart of the situation. I have learnt so much during my Paediatric Career which is great as everyday is a learning day. I am currently developing my Leadership skills to help support teams and service development.

How will the funding from The Evie Dove Foundation help you to advance your career and your impact/services to children?

Being able to tap into specialist education will further support development of my clinical skills and knowledge in the area of Neonatal dietetics to further improve service delivery and care.

How did you find out about The Evie Dove Foundation?

I had heard of Evie Dove Foundation via Word of mouth but hadn’t appreciated it could be an option for me. Their mission statement is really powerful and comes at a time of need where resource is lacking.

Tell us about yourself!

As a mum of 3 life can be busy! Currently I am football mum at the weekends taking my 2 girls to matches which is great and supports the Women’s football movement and we recently watched Arsenal ladies at Emirates stadium which was amazing. We are animal lovers and Cat-mad and have 3 cats (including a recent kitten), a bearded dragon and normally some chickens roaming about in the garden. We enjoy cooking and baking as a family so I am trying to upskill my children to know their way around a kitchen and a few dishes!
